St. Augustine: Floratam variety
Floratam is a variety of St. Augustine grass that thrives in sunny, warm climates. It has long, wide blades and a coarse texture. This grass grows rapidly during the summer months and requires moderate maintenance during the winter/dry months. It should be cut at a height of 3 1/2 to 4 inches, receive about 1" of water per week and have periodic fertilizer applications in order to maintain a proper thatch and healthy appearance. This one of the most widely used varieties of St. Augustine used in Florida.
Bahia Grass
Bahia is an inexpensive, warm-season pasture grass that is known for its high heat and drought tolerance along with a lower need for nutrients and watering during the winter months. This grass will go dormant during cold spells but will return as the weather gets warmer and the Florida rains return. This grass is a lower-cost alternative to St. Augustine and requires less maintenance, however, it does not give your lawn the same "perfectly manicured" look that Floratam will provide.
